Food and Drink Store Ratings
As Copmanthorpe has grown from a village into a detached suburb its shops have transformed to meet the needs of the community. Many of these shops now sell food or drink for consumption on and off the premises. It is a legal requirement for these businesses to be registered with the local authority and to be inspected on a regular basis. In 2009 The City of York Council joined the "Scores on the Doors" scheme where "local food businesses that serve food direct to the consumer will be awarded a star rating based on standards found at their most recent food hygiene inspection."
The majority of Copmanthorpe's Food businesses (as of April 2010) have received a 3 Star (good) or above review and will have received certificates to display on their premises.

The Scores on the Doors system is hard to make sense of, and believe me we've tried. When a store is inspected it is given a score for three different things: Confidence in Management, Hygiene and Structure. On their web site these scores are given in words rather than numbers, but the words do not have the same value as the the over all scoring (as shown in the table on the left). When you hover the pointer over the words the score appears as a tooltip (this may not work on all computers) and you see that, for example, Poor equals 3 out of 6 and Fair 4 out of 6. Also the lowest score is 1 (very bad) rather than 0.
There appears to be a rule that if you don't get good or better in every category then you cannot receive more than an overall score of 3 stars. Take for example The Annexe and Fred's Bakers. The Annexe scores 3 out of 5 for Confidence in Management and 6 out of 6 for both Hygiene and for Structure, a total of 15 out of 17, for this it receives an overall 3 star rating. Fred's Bakers scores 4 out of 5 for Confidence in Management and 5 out of 6 for both Hygiene and Structure, a total of 14 out of 17, which gives it a 4 star rating.
Stores are inspected around about every 18 months at which point they are given a new score. We will try and keep this page up to date, but if you do notice that a store has a new score please use our enquiry form to let us know.
